How Much Oil Should You Use on Hair, Face and Body?

The right amount of oil depends on the product, the area being treated and how dry or absorbent your hair or skin is. Begin with a small amount and add more only when needed.

Recommended Starting Amounts

AreaStarting amountHow to apply
Face and neck2–3 dropsPress onto slightly damp skin after cleansing.
Short or fine hair1–2 dropsWarm between the palms and smooth over the ends.
Long, thick or curly hair3–6 dropsApply gradually from the mid-lengths to the ends.
Scalp treatmentAbout 1 teaspoonPart the hair and massage small amounts across the scalp.
Hands or feet2–4 drops per areaMassage into clean, slightly damp skin.
Arms or legsAbout 1 teaspoon per limbSpread over damp skin and add more only if necessary.
Whole body1–2 tablespoonsApply after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp.

Using Oil on the Face

Two or three drops are usually enough for the face and neck. Rub the drops between clean fingertips, then gently press the oil into damp skin. If the skin remains very shiny or feels heavy after several minutes, use less next time.

Choose a facial oil suitable for your skin type and patch-test it before widespread use. Stop using it if irritation develops.

Using Oil on the Hair

For everyday smoothing, start with one drop and concentrate on dry ends. Applying too much near the roots can make hair appear greasy, especially when it is fine or straight.

A pre-shampoo scalp or hair treatment may require more oil. Apply only enough to lightly coat the intended area, leave it on according to the product directions and shampoo thoroughly afterward.

Using Oil on the Body

Body oil spreads most easily over slightly damp skin. Start with a teaspoon for each large area, such as an arm or leg. Massage it in before deciding whether another small amount is needed.

Dry areas such as elbows, knees and heels may benefit from an extra drop or two.

Important Safety Notes

  • Follow the directions on the specific product, since concentrated formulas may require different amounts.
  • Do not apply undiluted essential oils directly to the face, scalp or body. Use a properly formulated product or follow qualified dilution guidance.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes and broken or irritated skin.
  • Patch-test unfamiliar oils, particularly if your skin is sensitive or allergy-prone.
  • Use less product if you experience clogged pores, scalp buildup or persistent greasiness.
